The tv reality show starring Phillipe starck is exactly what the industrial designing industry needs. The 6 episode show shows an in-depth insight what’s to be expected in the commercial industry. I thought the structure of the series was very powerful, the flow of the whole design and thought process was very controlling in showing the viewer exactly what the apprentice was thinking.
It’s often said by lectures and online blog sites that only a certain few ides graduates get to actually work in industrial design and design actual products, and to face it this is the truth as there are other alternatives which branch off the skills in industrial design. Internships and work experience are very scares everywhere around the world and is extremely difficult to actually land experience firsthand, but with Starcks tv show it expresses the reality of the competition out there.
I thought from the start Ilsa, the winner of the series had a lot of potential to win the intern. The drive and passion she showed towards design overpowered the other contestants by far, which is what is needed in this tough industry. The contestant expressing their thoughts on maintain their composure during stressful times was also very useful to myself and would be to other students as well, the design methodology and process each contestant took was shown which others can determine it to be useful or a waste of time.
I think this type of tv series should be shown more due to the fact that it shows us different ways of tackling problems, although we should not copy them step for step, it will create a better understanding into design for all of us. Phillipe Starck is a worldwide design icon which a lot of people would like to meet including myself, but in truth only a handful of people in this world will meet and work with him, but by showing us an insight into how he designing is priceless.
